Holy Family Co-Cathedral

Seat of the Apostolic Vicar of Northern Arabia — serving Catholics from every nation in the heart of Kuwait City.

“One Lord, one faith, one baptism — gathered around the Holy Family.” Holy Family Co-Cathedral Parish

About the Co-Cathedral

Situated in Kuwait City, a short walk away from the shore of the Arabian Gulf, the Holy Family Co-Cathedral rises tall and majestic — an impressive edifice of warm sandstone against the backdrop of clear blue waters. While it is the seat of the Catholic Bishop in Kuwait, it is also a living testimony of the many wondrous deeds of God for His people.

Commissioned by the first Bishop in Kuwait, Mgr. Theophano Stella, and designed by the ingenious Milanese architect Emilio Tenca, the Cathedral began to take shape in 1956 on land graciously allocated by H.H. The Amir and the Government of Kuwait. It was solemnly blessed and consecrated on March 16, 1961, and dedicated to The Holy Family in the Desert.

The Co-Cathedral exists for all Catholics in Kuwait — a living church encompassing many activities within its active and diverse ministry, serving a congregation of 50,000 to 60,000 multi-national faithful spread across the three parishes of the Vicariate.

Parishioners are those who reside in the following areas Suleibikhat, Sharq, Safat, Bneid Al Gar, Shuwaikh, Khaitan, Farwaniya, Riggai, Omariya, Doha, Kaifan, Jahra, Mirqab, Andalus, Dasman, Shamiya, Yarmouk, Ardiya, Surra, Jabriya & Hawally

Inside the Cathedral

The Main Altar – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
The Main Altar
Built of natural stone on three steps, the altar stands free and approachable from every side. Sealed within are pieces of the rock of Calvary.

The Fresco
A deep-coloured large fresco depicting the Holy Family during a stop in the desert, created by artist Carlo Rapp of Tunis.
Stained Glass Windows – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
Stained Glass Windows
Crafted at the studios of “Vidrieras de Arte” in Bilbao (1974–1975), depicting scenes from Creation to Pentecost and the Sacred Mysteries.
The Baptistery – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
The Baptistery
A marble baptismal font in the shape of a cup, inscribed: “Qui Crediderit Et Baptizatus Fuerit Salvus Erit” — Mark 16:16.
Chapel of the Infant Jesus – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
Chapel of the Infant Jesus
Fondly known as the “Children’s Chapel”, it is used for private prayer, small Masses, and families with young children.
The Grotto & Precinct – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
The Grotto & Precinct
A semi-circular shrine to Our Lady resting on eight pillars, where the Holy Rosary is recited during May and October. A place of peace and devotion.
Choirs & Side Altars – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
Choirs & Side Altars
On either side of the sanctuary, two choirs are enclosed by low marble walls, each with a smaller side altar. A miniature replica of Our Lady of Arabia is enthroned on the left altar, while on the right the tabernacle shelters the Most Holy Sacrament. These spaces frame the sanctuary and support the sung prayer of the liturgy.
Altar of Our Lady of Arabia – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
Altar of Our Lady of Arabia
The altar of Our Lady of Arabia has become a quiet pilgrimage corner of the Co‑Cathedral, where people of many nations and even other faiths come with devotion, bringing offerings of candles, flowers and white fabric to entrust their intentions to her care.
Holy Water Fonts – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
Holy Water Fonts
Immediately inside the main side doors, solid marble holy water fonts welcome the faithful. Their carved ornamental motifs depict angels from the story of salvation, inviting all who enter to sign themselves with faith and reverence.
The Sacristy – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
The Sacristy
A quiet and holy, yet welcoming atmosphere fills the sacristy of the Co‑Cathedral. Here the sacred vessels, vestments and books are prepared for the liturgy, and it is often the place where the faithful meet a priest or seek the counsel and blessing of the Bishop.
The Upper Room – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
The Upper Room
A few steps above the sacristy is the Upper Room, used for private counselling, choir practices and intercessory prayer meetings. It recalls the Upper Room of the Gospels, where the Lord gathered with His disciples in prayer.
Marble Walls & Stained Glass – Holy Family Co-Cathedral
Marble Walls & Stained Glass
Marble‑panelled walls, crystal lamps and tall, narrow stained‑glass windows are among the Co‑Cathedral's most striking features. The sparkling coloured glass, designed by Mgr. S. Miguel and executed by Fr. Bengoa, OCD, was crafted at the “Vidrieras de Arte” studios in Bilbao between 1974 and 1975. Scenes from Creation to Pentecost and the sacred mysteries of the Church are depicted, while tiny roof windows add even more daylight to the interior.

The Marble Plaques

Inscribed on the wall outside the Holy Family Co-Cathedral
“In Grateful Remembrance of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah Al Salim Al Sabah and the Government of the State of Kuwait who in 1966 very kindly allotted this land to the Catholic Church and in Continuous Gratitude to H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah and the Government and the People of the friendly State of Kuwait — the Holy See (Vatican) and the Catholic Community in Kuwait express profound appreciation and thanks for this eternal gesture of generosity.”
