What is Baptism?

The gateway to the sacramental life and the beginning of the Christian journey.

Born of Water and the Spirit

Baptism is the first and foundational sacrament of Christian initiation. Through it, a person is cleansed from original sin, reborn as a beloved child of God, and incorporated as a full member of the Body of Christ — the Church.

The Catholic Church teaches that Baptism is necessary for salvation and is the doorway to all other sacraments. It marks the soul with an indelible spiritual seal and begins a lifelong covenant relationship with God.

"Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." — John 3:5

Why Baptism Matters

Baptism is more than a ceremony. It is an encounter with God's grace that transforms the soul.

🕊️

Cleanses from Sin

Original sin is washed away, and the soul is restored to God's grace and friendship.

👼

Child of God

The baptized becomes an adopted son or daughter of God the Father through the Holy Spirit.

Member of the Church

Baptism incorporates the person into the Body of Christ and the community of the faithful.

🔑

Gateway Sacrament

It opens the door to Confirmation, the Eucharist, and all other sacraments of the Church.

Indelible Seal

A permanent spiritual character is imprinted on the soul, marking one as belonging to Christ forever.

📖

Biblical Foundation

"Go therefore and make disciples … baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." — Matthew 28:19
