What is Holy Orders?

The sacrament of apostolic ministry.

Holy Orders is the sacrament through which the mission entrusted by Christ to his Apostles continues to be exercised in the Church until the end of time: thus it is the sacrament of apostolic ministry (CCC 1536).

It includes three degrees: the episcopate (bishops), the presbyterate (priests) and the diaconate (deacons) (CCC 1554).

The sacrament is conferred by the laying on of hands by the bishop, followed by a solemn prayer of consecration (CCC 1573). Like Baptism and Confirmation, it confers an indelible spiritual character and cannot be repeated (CCC 1582).

“And one does not take the honour upon himself, but he is called by God.”Hebrews 5:4
