What is Reconciliation?

The sacrament of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Those who approach the sacrament of Penance obtain pardon from God’s mercy for the offences committed against him, and are at the same time reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by their sins (CCC 1422).

It is called the sacrament of conversion, of Penance, of confession, of forgiveness and of Reconciliation, because it imparts to the sinner the love of God who reconciles (CCC 1423–1424).

Christ entrusted this ministry to the Apostles. Bishops and priests, by virtue of the sacrament of Holy Orders, have the power to forgive all sins “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (CCC 1461).

“Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven.”John 20:22–23
